Radeon R9 285

Having recently been the first photos of the Radeon R9 285 were surfaced, now the launch date of this new graphics card seems clear. On September 2 by 14 clock of the curtain should fall and then be the Radeon R9 285 also now available. It will replace the current Radeon R9 280. If and when a Radeon appears R9 285x, however, is still uncertain.

Tomorrow night celebrating AMD “30 years of graphics and gaming” with a live stream. During this event, the first information on the Radeon R9 285 and the underlying new “Tonga” graphics chip will already be presented. Restrict to exact specifications and performance figures but we will have to wait until September 2nd.
Up to now the AMD Radeon will be R9 285 with 1792 shader units, 112 texture units and 256 bit wide memory interface. It is equipped as standard with 2 GB, but it will also give models with 4 GB.
The difference to the R9 280 is Radeon respect. These specs only the memory, because this has a wider RAM interface (384 bit) and 3 GB. For AMD is the memory clock on the Radeon start R9 285 higher (1325 instead of 1250 MHz).

The biggest difference lies in the graphics chip. “Tonga” comes with fewer transistors than the “Tahiti” the R9 280 from (3.5 instead of 4.3 billion) and should work considerably more energy efficient. This is also apparent from the power supply to the graphics card. While Radeon R9 280 and 280X at least one 6-pin and one 8-pin power connector have for the power supply, the Radeon R9 285 comes out twice with 6-pin.
Unsecured rumors that the Radeon uses of R9 285 the “Tonga” graphics chip but not yet complete. Supposedly one month after this graphics card then the Radeon R9 285x come and replace the R9 280X. It is still unclear how many shader units will have the 285x. In some places, is of 2048 and reported that this should be the maximum for “Tonga”, but this is yet unconfirmed.
